Much Ado About...
Satanic Verses?

Monday, June 13, 2022

Dear Reader,

Two weeks ago, I sent you a Druthers News video with a local bookstore owner who wasn't too happy with me for promoting my novel, Much Ado About Corona, in front  of his shop (which sells the book). Jeanette Thiessen, a reader from Vancouver, had this to say:

"Salman Rushdie was hated for his book The Satanic Verses because people jumped to conclusions and refused to read this most important work. But in the end he was vindicated and is now one of the most respected authors of our time.

"I see that happening for you, John. Embrace the negativity (sourness) that lands on you because that is a sign that you have pushed the right buttons, and this is actually going to work in your favour."

It looks like Jeanette was right. The weekend that video streamed live — with the bookstore shunning and scolding me —  sales of the novel increased by a factor of ten.

PS In the Druthers video you can see local farmer and activist Dianne Fleischauer, who recently sent me this short review of the novel which she describes as a "catalyst of validation and healing."
