
Written in 1577, The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude by Etienne de la Boétie, asks a question that applies so much to the world we live in today: Why is it that a minority of rulers can remain in power over a majority of subjects who pay all the taxes?
His answer: Most people willingly submit to rule by a minority. Therefore, successful resistance lies not in arms, but in non-cooperation.
